The workshop trained a selected group of aspiring filmmakers and photographers in the craft of mobile documentation, giving participants hands-on experience shooting short documentary films using nothing but their phones — from filming technique to visual storytelling.
The route retraced Alexandria’s layered history, starting at Qaitbay Citadel — built on the site of the legendary Pharos Lighthouse (270 BC), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, engineered by Sostratus under Ptolemy II. Participants also explored the historic Heptastadion bridge connecting Pharos Island to the mainland, and walked through streets carrying centuries of names and stories: Fouad Street, Canopus Street (“Kanoub”), Nabi Danial Street (“Cardo Decumanus”), and the Moon Gate linking the city’s north to its south — ending at the Kom El Dikka lighthouse, built in 1894.
By the end of the session, participants had produced a collection of short documentary films to be screened publicly and submitted to mobile film festivals, alongside a set of photographs destined for a public exhibition credited to the trainees — all part of Alexandria Heritage Days.
